New Construction

Historical Renovation and Restoration

Restorations are very historically accurate projects which require removing non-original features and by repairing and reconstructing missing features from the building’s significant time period. Nantucket has a particularly rich collection of historical relevant homes and buildings.

Renovations are generally less historically accurate. The goal of most of our renovations is to adapt a house to its present owners. Our clients love their old houses but sometimes find that they’re too small, the mechanical systems are outdated, the kitchens and bathrooms need updating, or the floor plan just doesn’t work for them.

Mercatus Group has to date participated in more than a dozen full renovations and restorations of 17th, 18th, 19th, and 20th century historical homes.

Additions and decks

Adding architecturally appropriate additions to historic structures requires an understanding of both modern expectations for living and of the qualities that give these buildings their unique presence.

For years, Mercatus group has been building additions that blend seamlessly into the original historic work, faithfully reproducing period detail while meeting their clients’ needs for comfort and convenience. We are a modern building and renovation contractor bringing together a mastery of state of the art building techniques with a passion for historic architecture.

Some of our additions blend so well with the historic house that it’s difficult to tell that they’re additions. By being faithful to the original architecture (roof pitches, molding details, etc) a very successful merge of old and new is possible.

Kitchens and baths

Nowhere else in the house have changes in tastes and technology had such an impact on the use of space. Mercatus group achieves this balance by combining mastery of the full range of options for fixtures, appliances and systems with an understanding of what is essential to preserve and maintain historic balance throughout the structure. We strive to seamlessly incorporate new systems into historic work without destroying its irreplaceable identity.

We can recreate historic work, reconfigure historic layouts to accommodate modern designs and even conceal kitchen appliances and bath fixtures beneath period finishes. Our clients have learned that it is possible to enjoy comfort and modern conveniences without sacrificing historic character.
